December 7, 2002:
On a blustery, cold Sunday
afternoon, a group of BLS students gathered together in front of the Sovereign
bank in Chinatown. What were these kids up to? They were here for the annual
Christmas Tree lighting in Chinatown. This day proved to be a fun and
unforgettable experience for those that attended.
On Sunday December 8, 2002, ASIA and their members met at the Sovereign bank
in Chinatown at 12:00pm. From hereon, the students were told to pass out
flyers, allowing people to know that the tree (located on Harrison Avenue) was
to be lighted that day. Despite the sub-zero temperatures, the task was
nevertheless completed. Not long after, a crowd started to form around the
area where the tree was. Then again, many of them were not there for the tree
lighting; instead, they were there for the free gifts being passed out. As the
time to light the tree neared, a trolley, with Santa on board was scheduled to
arrive. (Hey!! What's Christmas without Santa?!) As Santa neared, along with
Mayor Menino, the crowd had to be kept under control and order had to be
maintained.
When the long waited trolley arrived, out came Santa's little elves who sang
Christmas carols, much to the amusement of those who already had the Christmas
spirit inside. When the carols were done, Mayor Menino had a few
words with the crowd and soon enough, with the help of Santa, the Christmas
tree was lighted! Following the lighting, the little children got into a line.
Every one of those adorable darlings got to chat with Santa,
telling Santa what they wanted for Christmas. With each passing child, the
crowd began to dwindle. Soon enough, it was time for Santa to return to the
North Pole, and everybody got their chances to say their goodbyes. It was
indeed hard
having to say adieu, but as long as you've been good, Santa will always pay
you a visit.
